What smartphone users in Germany should know about the new Corona app

The Corona warning app will start in Germany on June 16. Their use is voluntary. During the programming, particular attention was paid to the protection of personal data. The app is intended to help identify chains of infection at an early stage and prevent infections.

Germany now has a corona warning app. It runs on Apple smartphones and Android phones.

The Corona warning app will be launched in Germany on June 16. The application for smartphones should help on the way out of the corona crisis by identifying and breaking infection chains at an early stage. From June 15, the app will be available for download in the Apple and Google app stores for Apple and Android devices. The German corona warning app was developed by SAP and T-Systems and tested by the Fraunhofer Institute IIS in Erlangen in various everyday situations. To ensure consumer confidence, the app's source code can be viewed online on the GitHub platform. Around 65,000 software experts have already seen it, including members of the Chaos Computer Club, who overall had positive comments about the application. TÜV-IT also did not discover any problematic functions during a technical audit.

 

WHAT DOES THE APP DO?

The prerequisite for activating the Corona warning app is first of all that the user voluntarily installs the application on their smartphone and actively agrees to the data exchange. "Turn your smartphone into a corona warning system," the app then welcomes new users. The application informs you whether you have been in the vicinity of infected people. In the event of suspicion, you could then get tested and act faster instead of letting valuable time pass until you might get Covid-19 yourself.

 

HOW DOES THE APP WORK?

Smartphones with the installed Corona warning app exchange identification numbers with each other if they are within a few meters. The app uses short-range Bluetooth wireless technology to measure whether users have come closer than two meters to each other over a period of around 15 minutes. The location is not recorded. If a sick user tests positive for Corona, he enters this status himself in the app. This status must be officially confirmed, either via a QR code issued by the test laboratory or via a TAN number from a special telephone hotline. The Corona warning app is now active: all affected contacts, i.e. all users who have been in the vicinity of the sick person, receive a message that they should be tested.

 

NOT ALL SMARTPHONES ARE SUITABLE

The new Corona warning app does not run on every smartphone. The current operating system iOS 13.5 is required for installation on Apple devices. Unfortunately, users with an older iPhone 5, 5S or 6 cannot install the app. Android 6 and the support of Bluetooth LE are minimum requirements for Android smartphones, and the Google Play Services must also run on the smartphone.
